Letter Bb

This week was a busy week. the kids moved to Letter Bb.

Fatima, Zahra and Hussein were excited to make a butterfly out of Toilet paper.

All three pronounce the word butterfly as BABASALA. It sounds so cute, but i try to always use the right word.

They enjoyed the decoration part.

Below is the the finished craft.

During the course of the week they did many activities with Letter Bb

They did dot painting with Letter b.

Join the line is another activity they did.

Hussein was born with a pincer grip. He has always held the pen the right way without me showing him. I need to struggle with the two girls.

Counting the bears and sticking it was fun too, but with alot of assistance they managed to finish the activity.

The Month Of Muharram (The First Islamic Month)

“In a distant age and climate, the tragic scene of the death of Hussien will awaken the sympathy of the coldest reader.” —Edward Gibbon

This is the first month of the Islamic calendar. We Muslim Shias mark it as a mourning month.

On the 10th day of the month of Muharram 61H (October 11th 680 AD), a tragic event took place in the southern part of Iraq at a place known as Karbala on the bank of the Euphrates river. It seemed in those days insignificant from the historical point of view. A large army of 30,000 that had been mobilized by the Umayyad regime, besieged Imam Hussein, the grandson of the holy prophet Muhammad, and 71 of his loyal companions and forced them to pay allegiance to the corrupt caliph Yazid and to submit to his authority. The small group resisted and a severe battle took place in which the Imam and all his companions were killed, and his female family members were taken as war prisoners.

It appeared at that time, like hundreds of similar events, that this battle would be recorded in history and forgotten in time. However, the events that occurred on the 10th of Muharram in Karbala were to become a beacon and an inspiration for future generations, and a reflection of good versus evil.

Who was this small group? The leader of the small band of men who were martyred in Karbala was none other than Hussein , son of Ali ibn Abi Talib  and Fatima  daughter of the Prophet, and grandson of the Prophet , for whom the Prophet  once said, “Hussain is from me and I am from Hussein. May Allah love whoever loves Hussein.” Accompanying this small group were Hussein’s immediate family, relatives, and close companions.

Why do Muslims remember Ashura? Imam Hussein  sacrificed his life along with 72 believing men, all for the sake of truth over falsehood. The tragedy of Karbala represents a conscious confrontation and a courageous resistance for a sacred cause. The whole nation had failed to stand up to Yazid. They had succumbed to his will, and deviation and regression towards the pre-Islamic ways that were increasing.

Passiveness by Hussein  in this situation would have meant the end of Islam, as we know it. Imam Hussein  took it upon himself the responsibility of the whole nation. The greatest tragedy was he stood up for the noblest of causes—the defense of Islam, and was killed in such a cruel manner.

It is for this reason that the sacrifice of Hussein  is commemorated annually throughout the Muslim world. The tragic event shook the very foundations of the Muslim nation, stirred their consciousness, and became a beacon of light and guidance. The 10th of Muharram, Ashura serves as a reminder of the sacrifice of the family of the Prophet . It also makes Muslims aware of the people, then and now, who tried to destroy Islam and the family of the Prophet  and all that they stood for, as well as those who watched, listened, and did nothing.

Perceptions about Imam Hussein

Mahatma Ghandi once said: –

“I learnt from Hussein how to be oppressed yet victorious”

Archbishop Salim Ghazal, the head of the Catholic Church of Lebanon said:

“In this occasion, we stand a stand of prestige and greatness in front of the drama of this sensational tragedy. Because it shows the oppression that occurred against the human and humanity. It shows a big thirst to get the government and attacking all the values and beliefs that the Islamic message was formed based on and even the message of all the religions.

He continued:

“Truly, the tragedy of Karbala has been transformed in the Islamic history to a school that carries the banners or justice, rightness, love, sacrifice and braveness against the banners of delegation, screaming and defeat and against those who wanted to attack Islam and its teachings” {Le waa Saida and South Lebanon Newspaper}

Edward Gibson: (1737-1794) Considered the greatest British historian of his time:

“In a distant age and climate the tragic scene of the death of Hosein will awaken the sympathy of the coldest reader.” [The Decline and fall of the Roman Empire, London, 1911, volume 5, pp. 391-2].

I tried explaining the kids of the tragedy that had befallen on Imam Hussein and his family members.

Hussein was engrossed in the picture book that I have of the “Tragedy of Kerbala” as I was narrating the event.

Below is a model of the event of Kerbala which was made by the youths of the community in the mosque. Hussein was explaining bit by bit to his sisters as to what happened.

Letter A

This week, we officially started our school year.

The kids were ready to learn the Letter A.

I made some activities for them with the capital and small letter A.

Below are the activities the kids did. I plan to upload the activities but need to struggle to know how!!! as i am new to blogging, would really appreciate ideas and suggestions on how to.

Hussein painting the apple.

He then printed the apple on the paper.

Fatima ans Zahra enjoyed the apple painting too

I then asked them to stick the self adhesive labels on the Letter a instead of dot painting as we do not get Dot markers in our country.

They all enjoyed the activity.
